Chapter Sixteen

JOSHUA STARED at the clock for the millionth time. Where was Michael? He’d promised to be home for dinner, and surely he’d have called if he’d gotten delayed?

Joshua scratched his head. Maybe he’d gone to his course again?

He chanced another glance at the clock. A quarter past eight. Maybe there was a traffic jam or whatever holding Michael up.

Joshua eyed his phone and a swift battle took place within him. He didn’t want to appear clingy, but he needed to know if Michael was okay. He grabbed his phone and scrolled through his text messages to see if he’d missed one from Michael—another smiley face or heart or whatever Michael found to send him sometimes—but there was nothing. His heart sank.

He swiped his thumb across the screen, then clicked on Michael’s number. The phone kept ringing before his call went to voice mail. Joshua lowered the phone and stared at it in disbelief. Hadn’t Michael promised he’d always take his calls, no matter what?

Okay, okay, he wasn’t going to panic. Joshua pinched the bridge of his nose. He gasped when his left hip sent a spasming bolt through his body. Panting through the pain, he tried his best not to tense up even worse, or else the spasm would never subside.

If Michael didn’t pick up his phone, he’d have a good reason, a very good reason. Joshua just wished he was there so he could tell him about his mother’s phone call. Leaning back into the cream-colored sofa cushions, he sighed. He’d been so excited when he realized it was her. So freaking excited his heart seemed to beat out of his throat. His elation had faded off within a minute of their conversation.

Brian had suffered from a heart attack and was currently fighting for his life in the ICU. His mother had demanded he take the first flight to Springfield, Illinois. His initial reaction of “What for?” hadn’t gone over well with her.

She’d rambled and yelled, sometimes interspersed with sobs, that it was his duty to come and visit his stepfather. When he brought up the fact they never got along well, she’d called him a self-absorbed and ungrateful bastard. He’d clicked off and refused to take any more calls from her. She’d tried three more times before he went to work.

At least at work everything had been fine. Spending time with the kids always brightened his mood, and today hadn’t been any different. He’d been fine till he saw the blinking red lights on the answering machine. He still hadn’t listened to the messages, fearing what he’d hear.

The messages! He bolted forward, slapping his right hand against his forehead. Maybe Michael had called him on the landline. How stupid could he be?

His stomach flip-flopped and bile rose in his throat as he blinked at the flashing red light. Dammit! It was just an answering machine. Even if his mother had left a message, he was an adult, he could deal with it.

He punched the button for his
